Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a phospholipid made up of fatty acids, glycerol and phosphorous. It is found in foods such as liver, eggs and yolks.
What is Phosphatidylcholine?
Phosphatidylcholine is a specialized fat molecule involved in synthesis of cell membranes. It is also a precursor to acetylcholine which is an essential and important brain neurotransmitter.
Every cell in the body is encapsulated by a double layer of phospholipids and Phosphatidylcholine is one of the most essential. However, illness and growing old decreases the abundance of phosphatidylcholine in cell membranes throughout the body meaning the membranes are left dysfunctional and less efficient.
These less healthy cell membranes can hold onto toxins as they are less beneficial than healthy membranes consisting of healthy levels of phosphatidylcholine. Toxins can have detrimental effects on cellular function even at the mitochondrial level. The mitochondria are the powerhouse or energy center of the cell.
